Dynamic Shoreline

Forestoration was approached by the Flathead Lakers to help design and install a natural shoreline that could withstand erosive waves along Flathead Lake. After the Flathead Lakers identified a willing property owner, Timberwork Excavation removed the failing seawall along the waterfront and installed a dynamic equilibrium beach which reduces wave energy before they hit the shoreline. Forestoration worked with the landowner to design a landscape along the waterfront that would be aesthetically pleasing, maintain views of the lake, allow access to their dock and fire pit all while protecting the shoreline from erosion. We removed over 3,000 square feet of sod grass and replaced it with native plant species, particularly emphasizing low-growing plants such as grasses and sedges that would maintain views of the lake. This project continues to be showcased by the Flathead Lakers to other property owners as an alternative to seawall construction and as an educational opportunity on the importance of maintaining native plant communities along the shoreline. This is a long-term and cost-effective solution to controlling erosion along the lakeshore while creating wildlife habitat and promoting clean water.
